THE ABC LOGO EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT BY FOURTHCANVAS

We all at some point wished we were the creators of something that everyone is talking about. Who never wished to be Paul Rand, as he delivered with confidence and certainty Next’s logo to Steve Jobs, and while he presented the timeless IBM logo design. Who in the world right now does not wish to be Elon Musk?
We have an idea (if you don’t mind the distant correlation) of how that feels right now, with one our recent brand identity design for the Africa Business Conference 2016. Truly, most of our projects get loved (really loved) by the client at first presentation but then this goes far beyond the typical.
Someone probably needs to put us in our right place now and tell us how what we did was ‘just fine’ and how the whole rave of responses does not really match up to all of this happiness, but then nothing excites you more than having people at a conference really pay attention to and commend the awesome visual communication as it “does the perfect and beautiful job of conveying the message of the conference,” like a participant puts it.
Our excitement goes even beyond the “very very” positive and passionate response to our brand identity and entire conference graphics design for the ABC 2016. However this particular project has a connection to our zeal as young Africans trying to define and exemplify the excellence of Africa, and how the people, talent and creative power of this continent is in no way sub-standard to what is obtainable in any other part of the world.
So we really wanted something different. It was not about a “nice and good looking logo”. It was not something that with a change of text, could be applicable to say, a Europe Business Conference. We wanted to reflect a logo that was naturally African, and that embodied the “Africa Rising” theme of the conference.
It only then makes sense that at the end of several nights, sachets of coffee and in-house design reviews, everybody thinks it makes a lot of sense. That the young African man or businessman could easily relate to an feeling of Africa rising – and fast.

The official logo design for the Africa Business Conference 2016 which was held on the 3rd of March,2016 is an innovative illustration of an Africa that is on its way up and in top speed. The logo attempts to encapsulate the theme and essence of the conference. The spectrum of colours reflects the richness, vibrancy, creativity and youthfulness of Africa and an envisioned continental growth hinged on an active and diversified economy, while a Babe Bamboo-based custom typeface stays true to an African signature of difference, of values and a unique and beautiful culture.
Africa is on top speed. The youth population and the huge potentials of this continent will continue to grow extensively. Its our decision to key into this and why shouldn’t we NOW? And who says design is not a tool for change.
When we asked what people thought about the ABC logo icon on our Instagram (@fourthcanvas), top (and awesome) designer, Michael Mulnix @designed_mulnix from Minneapolis said “I see a tornado.” That made us pause for a while to wonder how he among several other people who had responded and connected with the Africa, missed it, but then we figured out that to the non-African, it may not come straight to the mind in the first moment of attention but then truly as we put it in our response: “Close as well to our intention, especially when you consider the speed and force of a tornado.”
